1-Pfennig Banknote

Zeulenroda, a city in southeastern Thuringia, Germany, was a stronghold of knitwear manufacturing in the 18th and 19th centuries. My connection to Zeulenroda is through a 1-pfennig banknote, issued by the city on January 1, 1920, and signed by the mayor, which I recently acquired.

  • For me, a curiosity.

❓How did 1-pfennig banknotes come about at that time?

💡Banknotes like this 1-pfennig note from Zeulenroda are also called "Notgeld" (emergency money). They usually arose in situations of scarcity caused by economic and financial crises, often in connection with wars.

💶 In these times of shortage, when legal tender was lacking or worthless, emergency money, like this 1-pfennig note, was issued by municipalities or private companies.

📌 What's remarkable to me is that the 1-pfennig banknote (5x4cm) looks more like a postage stamp than a banknote...
