Beyond the Boardroom
Travel, Strategy, and Well-being
The life of a board member is often painted with broad strokes of strategic decisions and high-level meetings, but beneath the surface lies a dynamic tapestry of global movement and personal discipline. My year, particularly May, exemplifies this intricate balance, weaving through major financial hubs and culminating in impactful discussions, all while maintaining a steadfast commitment to personal well-being.
My annual travel schedule typically involves at least three extensive trips, each spanning nearly four weeks. This past May, however, presented a particularly dense itinerary, kicking off with a significant milestone in London. Gulf International Bank’s annual spring conference served as a cornerstone, bringing together sharp minds to discuss pivotal industry trends. Beyond the strategic dialogues, the occasion was imbued with a sense of history and camaraderie as we celebrated the 50th anniversary of GIB UK, reconnecting with colleagues and alumni who have shaped its legacy.
From the bustling financial heart of London, my journey seamlessly transitioned to the vibrant city of Zagreb. Here, two intensive days were dedicated to board committee meetings at Addiko Bank, exploring the granular details of performance and future directives. These sessions, while demanding, are crucial for ensuring the robust oversight and strategic alignment necessary for sustained growth.
The final leg of this demanding month led me to Riyadh, the dynamic capital of Saudi Arabia, for PIF’s Directors’ Gathering 2025. This gathering was a convergence of minds, an invaluable opportunity to engage with fellow directors. Our discussions centered on the current and future performance of PIF portfolio companies, exploring not just financial metrics but also the profound impact we can collectively make. It's in these collaborative environments that visions are refined and actionable strategies for meaningful change are forged.
Amidst this relentless pace of international travel and high-stakes meetings, a non-negotiable ritual provided a vital anchor: an hour or two spent at the gym, no matter the city. Whether in Frankfurt, London, Zagreb, or Riyadh, this dedicated time was more than just physical exercise; it was a mental sanctuary. It allowed me to clear my mind, process the day's complexities, and, most importantly, maintain the physical and mental resilience essential for navigating the demands of a global leadership role. This consistent commitment underscores that true productivity isn't just about the work done, but also the self-care that sustains it.
